What the Heck is a Salon?

Writer: Theatre ArielTheatre Ariel

You might have noticed that one of Theatre Ariel’s main modes of performance are our Salons. And you might be wondering, “What the heck is a salon?” Obviously, we’re not talking about pop-up beauty shops at synagogues and JCCs. Not that that isn’t a great idea for a budding entrepreneur to work out (we’re looking at you, Tribe12 fellows!)... So today’s post is here to help you understand what we mean when we say, Salon theatre.

The Origins of the Salon

Let's take a little trip back in time to 1800s Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow. In these metropolitan meccas, there are Jewish homes with beautiful parlors, where some of the greatest writers, philosophers, poets, playwrights, and artists get together for an evening of intellectual and cultural exchange. These gatherings, known as “Salons”, were the epitome of sophistication. Among other activities, people would read plays aloud, discuss ideas, and enjoy each other's company in an intimate setting.

Reviving a Tradition

Fast forward to spring 2011. Theatre Ariel decided it was time to bring back this cherished Jewish tradition with a modern twist. Thus, Salon Ariel was born. Our Salons are dramatic concert-style play readings held in intimate settings. Before COVID, they were held in the cozy, elegant settings of beautiful homes in our region – just like our 19th century model. Post-pandemic, we’ve moved to a public-venue model, though we still work to retain all the intimacy of performing in homes.

What’s important to know is that this isn’t your typical night at the theatre; it’s an evening of immersive storytelling, intellectual stimulation, and engaging conversation.

What Exactly Happens at a Salon?

So, what the heck is a Salon at Theatre Ariel? It’s a unique Jewish cultural event, where professional actors read new and established plays from music stands, creating an intimate and focused experience for the audience. This format is designed to be “theatre without distractions.” There are no elaborate sets or costumes—just the actors, the words, and you.

A Unique Theatrical Experience

  • Intimate Settings: The venues help break down the barriers between performers and audience.

  • Focus on the Play: Without the distractions of a traditional theatre setup, the spotlight is on the play itself, allowing the audience to fully engage with the text and performances.

  • Community and Connection: The intimate setting fosters a sense of community, making everyone feel like part of the experience.

The Magic of Post-Performance Conversations

You may hear a lot of theatres talk about their post-show “talkbacks”. At Theatre Ariel, we call them “conversations” – because that’s what they are: lively discussions between the audience and the artists, the artists and one another, and the audience with itself! Best of all, the Salon format ensures there won’t be lots of questions about how the actors memorized their lines. Salon talkbacks get into the meat of the play.

These post-show conversations are one of the most beloved aspects of a Theatre Ariel performance – for the audience and the artists. The themes and challenges raised by the plays become the starting point for rich, engaging conversations. The show doesn’t end until the audience stops talking about it. These discussions are an

integral feature of Theatre Ariel’s work, providing an accessible entryway into the theatrical experience for both seasoned and novice theatre-goers. Everyone leaves with a deeper understanding of the play, its Jewish and universal themes, and full of thoughts.

Over a Dozen Years of Diverse Programming

For over a dozen years, Salon Ariel has presented a wide range of programming—dramas, comedies, solo performances, and special programs. While we primarily focus on new works, we occasionally dip into the rich Jewish theatre repertoire. This diversity ensures there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of poignant dramas or light-hearted comedies. Our Salons offer a unique and intimate way to experience theatre, where you can discover new works, engage in meaningful conversations, and feel like part of a vibrant community.
